Instructor: Jocelyn Swanson
Monday, July 21 - Friday, July 25
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
This summer’s art campers will explore skills as artists and heritage handcrafters while exploring different mediums through a variety of projects. You’ll make masks and handcrafted journals, whittle a pencil, construct your own 3D color wheel, paint your homemade paint with pine needle brushes – to name just some of your choices. Along the way, you’ll look back in time at how we came to have so many different ways of making art.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
“Art is a spirit and an on-going practice that has led to both my passion and purpose. My passion has been to cultivate the art of nature, celebrating the intricate, ever-changing dialogue between the natural world and human creativity. Nature, with all its complexities and subtleties, offers an endless well of inspiration to me as artist. Through working directly with natural elements, I have found my purpose as an educator. I invite my students to join me in developing a deeper relationship with the environment – to cultivate a greater sense of awe and responsibility toward the world that sustains us. In so doing, we unleash our potential to demonstrate its beauty and power in our creative expression of it. My first career, with a degree in business communications, was in corporate marketing, followed by twenty years as a freelance writer and consultant. My second career took me into education and back for a master’s degree and Montessori teacher certification. I have since founded and directed two Montessori secondary schools, become an education consultant and teacher trainer. I now co-direct art and nature education programs for children and adults, in both public and private settings, on and off of our small regenerative Virginia farm.”
