August solo show: Reclaimed; Carved & Cast
August solo show:
Reclaimed; Carved & Cast
featuring
Christopher Wagner
Opening Reception:
Friday, August 1, 5:30PM - 7:30PM
This show focuses on the human experience relating to and engaging with animals. The animals depicted have either benefited from human expansion or have recently been the subject of their efforts to save them. Masked figures are trying to look at the world through animal eyes, stacked totemic sculptures highlight the absurdity of these relationships, and solo animal carvings are all animals that the artist has engaged with.
The title “Reclaimed; Carved & Cast” is in reference to all the material the show is crafted from. Every piece is made from reclaimed material whether wood, bronze, or aluminum. Many of the sculptures and panels are carved straight from blocks of wood that show evidence of their past lives. The cast sculptures contain raw material melted down from salvaged metal.
The First Friday opening reception for this show will take place at Arts on Main (6580 Main Street, Gloucester VA 23061) on Friday, August 1st from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. Live music will be provided by Chris Smith. Light bites will be served and beer + wine will be available for purchase. As a special treat, the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society will be attending First Friday with adoptable dogs from the shelter! You won’t want to miss it!
The show will be on display at Arts on Main until Saturday, August 30th. The gallery is open Wednesday - Saturday from 12-5pm.
Many thanks to our August Sponsor, Mary Jane Zander!

She retired from that career to be a full time Stained Glass Artist. As an art lover, Sue Hill has always had an interest in art and vibrant colors. She has worked with a lot of processes and materials, but her love always takes her to the beauty of stained glass. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
“Art is a spirit and an on-going practice that has led to both my passion and purpose. My passion has been to cultivate the art of nature, celebrating the intricate, ever-changing dialogue between the natural world and human creativity. Nature, with all its complexities and subtleties, offers an endless well of inspiration to me as artist. Through working directly with natural elements, I have found my purpose as an educator. I invite my students to join me in developing a deeper relationship with the environment – to cultivate a greater sense of awe and responsibility toward the world that sustains us. In so doing, we unleash our potential to demonstrate its beauty and power in our creative expression of it. My first career, with a degree in business communications, was in corporate marketing, followed by twenty years as a freelance writer and consultant. My second career took me into education and back for a master’s degree and Montessori teacher certification. I have since founded and directed two Montessori secondary schools, become an education consultant and teacher trainer. I now co-direct art and nature education programs for children and adults, in both public and private settings, on and off of our small regenerative Virginia farm.”

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
“Hi there, my name is Janet Griffin and I am a fiber artist. Specifically, I’d like to say I am a tapestry Weaver. I use a cotton warp background on my loom, and I inlay wool yarn to create an image. My Tapestry weavings are based on the techniques developed by Theo Moorman , based in England. Additionally, I find felted wool extremely creative. Felted paintings, felted bowls, felted flowers, felted purses work extremely well together. My favorite kind of fiber is Corriedale, Romney, and Merino wool or yarn, cotton yarns, Silk, Leicester locks , and Mohair. Feathers are kind of fun too. As you can tell I’m very much drawn into texture. I do love how wool can be soft and fluffy; and yet transformed into wet, thick fabric.”

Sara McCourt An avid knitter, Sara found that the needles in her hands were the gateway tool to a deeper passion: fiber. Wondering about the sourcing and processing of her mail-order wools led her to complete her Master’s Spinning Certification program at the Olds College in Alberta, Canada. She then began to use her handspun yarns in weaving. This of course led to the use of natural and synthetic dyes in her work. Now,Sara spins and dyes her own yarn, fibers, and fabrics for use in her various fiber arts.

Storytelling with Katrina
Storytelling with Katrina
”THERE’S TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY”
First story: The Three Bears and the Home Invasion
Second story: The Three Evil Little Pigs
Saturday, August 16
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
This program takes two very popular and traditional fairy tales, and tells them from a different point of view. Katrina will be telling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears from Mama Bear's point of view, and the story of The Three Little Pigs from the big bad wolf's point of view.
The goals of this storytelling event are to encourage the audience to tell their own stories about their lives, experiences, and history. No one can tell your story but you; and to always ask questions before making decisions about people and/or situations, because "there's two sides to every story." This storytelling event helps encourage critical thinking skills in a fun way; highlights the importance of each person's truth; introduces the rudiments of individual storytelling.
This event is open to all ages.
ABOUT KATRINA
An extremely involved and knowledgeable individual in the community, Dr. Katrina White Brown truly enjoys her life and the various jobs she has held in the past and holds today in “retirement.”
Highlights of some of her work include serving as a newspaper editor of a daily paper in the U.S. Virgin Islands to her current position as associate pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Gloucester, as well as a contact ranger at Machicomoco State Park in Hayes. She has numerous activities she has been, or is, a part of and seems to have boundless energy and enthusiasm for all.
Brown said she has “the perfect retirement job.” She was the first contact ranger hired at Machicomoco State Park when it opened in 2021. One of Virginia’s newest state parks, it holds the distinction of focusing on indigenous peoples, most especially Native Americans. As a “contact ranger,” Brown is one of the first people to greet the public as they come to visit.

“I am an old hippie from the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. I have had multiple careers since leaving the mountains, but wound up in Newport News - retiring from Ferguson Enterprises as a Business Analyst, after 25 years. I have been crocheting since the age of 12 and doing macrame since my early 20's. I also knit and weave. I love all things fiber!! I managed a small craft shop when my children were young (kept them in the shop with me) and it was there, that I taught crochet and macrame. After moving to Fl in the early 80's, I continued to do fiber crafts while working civil service at Elgin Air Force Base. I am looking forward to teaching an age old craft that is near and dear to his hippie's soul. Peace !!”

Juli works from real life observations and her own reference photos, focusing on the play of light and shadow, creating drama and visual interest in her art. Often working on large canvases, Juli paints carefully and slowly, creating numerous layers of paint, building as she goes. I want to transport the viewer to a beautiful world of color and light with my paintings, to take them into a garden of delight!” Anyone can see that the common thread through all her artwork is a love of color and light. She then began to use her handspun yarns in weaving. This of course led to the use of natural and synthetic dyes in her work. Now, Sara spins and dyes her own yarn, fibers, and fabrics for use in her various fiber arts.

What is a Walking Artist?
What is a Walking Artist?
VMFA Special Workshop
Instructor: Alexandria Searls
Saturday, July 26
10:00 AM - 2:30 PM
Join VMFA Instructor Alexandria Searls on Saturday, July 26th from 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM for a VMFA Special Workshop at Brent & Becky’s Bulbs!
A walking artist creates the experience of a walk and then materializes that experience in text, photography, film, or a design. The walk can be short or long, fast or extremely slow, in a pattern or in a straight line. The walk can be along an established path or through fields and woods without a path. The walk can be along city streets or out in nature or in a combination of the two. The walk for this particular workshop will take place along the beautiful gardens at Brent & Becky’s Bulbs.
This workshop will introduce you to walking art, its history and its practice. First, you’ll watch a presentation of videos about the walking artists Richard Long, Hamish Fulton, and Cardiff & Miller. Then we’ll head out to explore the gardens for our walking art piece. Together, we’ll decide on the design of our walk, taking the history of the area into consideration, as well as the sights and sounds. We’ll choose our methods of materializing our walk. We can film or photograph during our walk, or we can walk and then return to do the documentation.
The highpoint of the day will be doing the walk itself, claiming our path and our interaction with the land.
Finally, we can each write text or paint a design reflecting our walk. With Adobe Premiere, we can cut together a video that shows our walking art.
The first part of this workshop will take place at Brent & Becky’s Bulbs. We will then break for lunch and meet back at Arts on Main to complete the video. All supplies will be provided by the instructor. It is suggested to bring your own camera/phone with a camera, but the instructor will have cameras to borrow. Bring your friends and come join in on this special workshop!

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
“I have always doodled with a pencil and had an affinity for the arts. As a child, my parents enrolled me in art lessons with a hometown artist after my mother declared that all I did was draw and color! As an adult wanting serious artistic direction, I began to take drawing classes at a local art center in Ohio. Those classes challenged my abilities! I entered the art shows there and started to win awards and sell my paintings. The knowledge I received in those drawing classes was exactly what I needed to get started in other art mediums. I love them all, but pastels and oils are my favorite! Fondly remembering the classes I took as a child, I taught art to students of all ages for many years in a homeschool co-op environment. I also passionately taught kids and adults in my studio when I lived in OhioI now live in Deltaville to be close to family. I am happily married to my high school sweetheart, Ray. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren, and family brings us the greatest joy!”

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
“Creating art has always been a main focus in my life. Professionally, I worked as a graphic designer for many years while also pursuing other creative activities. I moved to Virginia 20 years ago and spent the first 6 years as a wildlife rehabilitator raising mostly orphaned baby squirrels. In 2012 I returned to art in the form of drawing in graphite, charcoal, and colored pencils. Fiber art has always interested me and Idiscovered felting in 2015. Creating in fiber – wet and needle felting as well as tapestry weaving – is currently where my journey has taken me. I enjoy the challenge of starting with loose wool fibers and in the case of wet felting, work with soap, water, and agitation to form my vision into a picture or vessel. In needle felting I also start with loose fibers but a barbed needle is my tool and with many needle stabs I create a picture or sculpture. I find both felting and weaving meditative in its repetitiveness and I like that I am using ancient art forms to create something contemporary. But no matter what form creation takes, for me, it is always about the joy of finding that seed of inspiration and seeing it come into form. My art has been accepted in many juried shows and has won awards. I am a member of the Williamsburg Spinners and Weavers and exhibit at the Art Speaks Gallery in Mathews. I have also taught classes in felting and weaving.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jason Abbott
“Art has always played a major role in my life. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to share my art. I am a self-taught artist. I have spent my life experimenting, learning, and building my technique. My desire is to create art that evokes an emotion in the observer.”
JODY BALL
AS AN ARTIST, I view each painting as a faith endeavor into the unknown guided by a silent intuitive voice, this is a gift from God. As I work, I am inspired by the wonderment of nature with its depth and beauty, I then step back and ask myself “how did I do that?” So much of my inspiration has come from local parks and nature preserves in Ohio and the surrounding states as my husband and I spent 20 months traveling around the USA.
Drawing and painting have been a part of my life since childhood. My parents enrolled me in art classes with the prominent Mason Ohio artist at that time and her teachings have been with me ever since. Fondly remembering that experience, I passionately taught drawing and painting to students of all ages for several years in my Pansy House Studio when we lived in Ohio (on Pansy Road!). In the past I have also taught art in a homeschool co-op environment.
My paintings grace the walls of many homes across the country and I have accumulated many awards and ribbons for my work. You can view that list here: Jody's Awards I have also participated in many exhibitions over the years and you can view that list here: Jody's Shows & Exhibitions
Mike Burnett
Mike Burnett has had an interest in all kinds of art related projects since his early years attending art classes in public schools. He grow up appreciating the outdoors while hunting and fishing with his father in the lower Chesapeake Bay area and shot his first pair of wood ducks when he was eleven. With his art background, in 1983 Mike opened his own sign manufacturing company in Hampton, Va. The company was very successful and grow to over forty employees, this allowed Mike to continue keeping his hands working in all types of art projects including carving full size characters for Busch Gardens in Williamsburg for their theme rides. He was looking for something to do during retirement and was greatly influenced by some of the carvers he meet, like Russell Fish, Wayne Waterfield, John Day and Heck Rice, after attending a carving show at The Rappahannock River Waterfowl Show in 2013. He entered his first competition decoy in 2014 and since then, has won over one hundred and seventy awards and ten “Best in Show” awards at various east coast competitions with his carved decoys. He was also awarded “Carver of the Year” in 2109, 2022, 2023 and 2024 for Ducks Unlimited from various Virginia Chapters.
His decoy carving work can be viewed on his website at, http://saltywaterdecoys.com
Deborah Butler
“Born in Hampton Virginia, I have lived in many other places in the South and Midwest, but have returned home to my native state to enjoy its peace and beauty in my retirement. I have been painting and drawing in many different media since 2009 when I began painting rural Indiana scenes in watercolor. Upon arriving back in Virginia in 2013, I have taken many classes in drawing, including graphite and colored pencil, my favorite of which is graphitint. Watercolor pen and ink is closely linked to these and I work in this medium often. In 2017 I began painting in acrylic and now find myself exploring compositions with acrylic and cold wax, a vibrant medium for many visual subjects. As a visual artist, I am drawn to render natural objects (still life, vistas, animals). Nature captivates my imagination most, and I often move from realistic to impressionist styles, or from realism to fanciful or symbolic representations.”
Gloria Coker
Gloria Coker was an illustrator for the Newport News, Virginia Daily Press (a Chicago Tribune newspaper) newsroom for twelve years before pursuing her career as a professional fine artist. Her work there included illustrating newsroom and feature stories as well as courtroom art, which appeared in the newspaper and on TV. The 2021 Netflix documentary, “The Innocence Files” showcases some of her work. Her work for the police departments depicting the perpetrators of crimes has resulted in convictions.
She was a volunteer as the artist at the Virginia Living Museum, painting and drawing for children and guests. Gloria also demonstrates in college classrooms and for fundraising auctions such the New American Theater in Hampton, Virginia. She has been a guest speaker lecturing on her art through the South.
Her loose and vivid acrylics capture her feelings about people of all ages as they engage in their passions and everyday activities. She displays most of her art including musicians and dancers, in the office of Associates in Dermatology in Hampton, Virginia and in her studio by appointment. Her collectors are worldwide. Her awards are numerous.
Ellen DeMaria
Ellen paints watercolors, acrylics, and mixed media with an expressive brushstroke, often depicting her beloved waters of the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia, as well as the ocean nearby. Ellen’s family owns a seafood business which has given her insight into the often-rugged waterman’s life and the inherent beauty in the rustic elements surrounding that livelihood.
She refers to her painting style as “abstract realism” and when painting each day, she states that is a very intuitive process. While frequently inspired by an image–either up-close or from a photo–her paintings often begin with an idea that leads her to create unexpected artworks, hopefully evoking feelings for the viewer. Ellen has been painting for about 35 years, and continues to take workshops and painting seminars with some of the country’s finest watercolorists.
Lawrence Hollingsworth
Lawrence Hollingsworth, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, derived his inspiration to paint from Country and Coastal landscapes and museum visits during his travels as an antiques importer in Europe and the U.K. He studied the styles and painting techniques of a wide range of past and present painters such as Turner, Corot, Courbet and Schmid, et.al. His primary medium is oil on canvas or linen and has patrons both in the Continental U.S. and Europe. He received his Doctorate Degree from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and he currently resides in Gloucester, Virginia.
Michael Kravchak
“I majored in architecture in college, with a minor in art history. I studied under Professor Amy Fell, Professor John Gardner, and Sculpture Professor, J. Cherry. I have always enjoyed the Arts, and I have experimented in many mediums, i.e., pencil, oils, acrylics, pen and ink, and clay sculpture.
For many years, I painted and sketched for relaxation; however, I always wanted to learn to work in watercolor. Upon my retirement as a District Manager from UGI, an energy company, I took my first course in watercolor with Robert Burnell at Portsmouth Fine Arts Institute. I have also taken a semester course with Betty Anglin at Christopher Newport University.
I have found my greatest challenge and satisfaction working in watercolor. I enjoy painting local and historical scenes from the Tidewater area and along the Chesapeake Bay. I also enjoy painting scenes from the Outer Banks of North Carolina and many other beautiful places I have been fortunate enough to visit.
I am a member of the Charles H. Taylor Art Center and Yorktown Arts Foundation.”
Judy R. Mays
Judy Mays is a native Virginian, with very deep family roots dating back to Jamestown. In 1978 she left the area and moved with her husband, an executive with the General Electric Company, to Cincinnati, OH, where they lived for twenty-three years. While living in Cincinnati she studied at the Middletown Fine Arts Center, in Middletown, OH, and the Art League in Wyoming, OH, where she won several awards.
Upon returning to Virginia in 2001, Judy studied at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School for many years in addition to studying with other professional artists in Virginia. She has won many significant awards throughout the Hampton Roads region.
Her favorite medium is oil; however, she also enjoys working in pastels. Her favorite subjects to paint are children’s portraits, still life, and figurative scenes. Judy and her husband currently reside in Williamsburg where she is active in several local art organizations.
Tierney Miller
“Each of my works captures not only a visual interpretation, but includes the spiritual nature of a moment…” While attending high school & college, Tierney’s interest in travel led her to pursue a career in photo-journalism. The time spent behind the camera and in the darkroom greatly enhanced her observation skills and refined her eye for detail. Until recently, designing, owning and operating retail establishments has been Tierney’s primary professional focus. She has always had an appreciation for art & was considering a second career in art brokerage & appraisal, when a major turning point came in the summer of 1996. On a whim she decided to enroll in a fine art painting class. She returned to Western State College in Gunnison, CO and earned her BFA in Sculpture in 1999. She has been creating and exhibiting her art ever since. Serving as a catalyst for her work, Tierney’s passion for travel continues.
Lew Thatcher
Lew creates fine art in Vail, Colorado, and on the Virginia shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Over 40 years of sailing and exploring the waters, marshes, and harbors of the Chesapeake have provided him a vast wealth of maritime subjects.
Reasoning that art is a form of graphic communication, Lew paints in the realist genre. His work is detailed, focused, and believable. Influencers have included living masters Daniel E. Green, Scott Christensen, Alan Flattman, and others. He is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters’ Association and the American Society of Marine Artists. Gallery representation is by On-The-Hill Gallery and Yorktown Hall Gallery, both in Yorktown, VA, and Vail Valley Art Guild Gallery in Eagle, CO.

Thank you to our June Music Sponsor, Cook Foundation!
Van Hutchins is a musician, singer, and actor who was born and raised in Gloucester, Virginia. From a young age, Van was drawn to the art of performing. He loved to dance to Michael Jackson and sing as a little boy, taking every chance he could to show off his talent at family gatherings and Elementary School talent shows. Later in life, Van decided to pick up music. He taught himself how to play guitar, piano, and drums. Starting with piano, Van learned a variety of songs ranging from Queen to Billy Joel. On drums, he enjoys playing songs from bands like RUSH and Metallica. When Van started playing guitar, he immediately fell in love. He enjoys playing music that ranges from blues, to rock, and everything in between. Beyond his passion for music, Van loves to act on stage. His interest in theater arose when he wrote a skit for Odyssey of the Mind. Van could not stop acting after he did a production of Johnny Appleseed a few years later. Since then, he has done productions with his High School like The Little Mermaid and with his Community Theatre like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Matilda. He has even competed in some theatrical competitions. Van’s love for performing has followed him everywhere he has gone as he has grown up. He has many goals set to continue bringing audiences together with his dedication and craftsmanship.
